Vertical Applications of ProtoGenie

ProtoGenie’s universal access, friendly interface, reusable protocols, and Webcentric-open system architecture make for many exciting and innovative vertical applications.

ProtoGenie On Campus
Virtually all universities have a campus computer support facility. Many of these facilities offer services involving computerized research methods, such as computer-assisted survey technology. A good example is the Computer-Assisted Survey Methods program in the Survey Research Center, the University of California, at Berkeley, which offers consulting services and facilities for research design, data entry, data management, and data analysis. Other programs, such as the Social Science Computing Laboratory at Berkeley, provide support for archival analysis and related methods. But, few, if any, provide any support for computerized control group experiments, clinical trials, psycho-physiological research, and other research and evaluation methods. The online features of ProtoGenie™ make it an ideal facility for students and faculty at these institutions. ProtoGenie can help students design and create software for their term projects and theses. It can be used in statistics courses to design real studies and create data sets to statistically analyze and it can be used in classes across the board to help make the connection between theory and research and theory and practice.

In Departmental Computer Libraries
With ProtoGenie’s easy availability and powerful tools will come opportunities to develop studios of ProtoGenie protocols within departments and fields. A good example is in “Computers-in-the- Law programs at Law Colleges and institutes. Potential protocols include empirical research and expert systems to assist decision making. More on Departmental Computer Libraries.

In the Classroom
Use ProtoGenie in the classroom to bring to life scientific method and research design. At the college level, integrate ProtoGenie into scientific methods curricula. In stat courses, make the critical connection between study design and statistical analysis using ProtoGenie. Add the "applied science" dimension to all social and physical science curricula. Step into the new world of research on the Net with ProtoGenie to build your protocols. Use ProtoGenie Web research as the next step in distance learning. Integrate ProtoGenie into primary and secondary school science, chemistry, physics, and mathematics courses to illustrate concepts and to teach the foundations of empirical science and quantitative methods. Let students create their own studies. Use on-line experiments, as in chemistry, to extend instruction beyond the classroom.

In Diagnosis
Diagnostic procedures basically involve asking questions or presenting stimuli or both with paths dictated by patient responses. Procedures also may involve the presentation of a stimulus of some kind and use the patient’s response to that stimulus to determine which fork in the road to take. ProtoGenie can create and present stimuli and take conditional paths. Consequently, the foundation for computer supported diagnostic applications is already available in ProtoGenie. More on Diagnosis.

In The Field
Take your tools with you to the field. Collect your data in schools and other field setting using local facilities or your laptop and ProtoGenie Online. Use a handheld with Internet capability to take notes and record observations in the field. Collect data from whole groups of individuals in natural or experimental settings, each with their own ProtoGenie recording device.

In Product Evaluation
Thousands of new and modified products (software and hardware) come on the world’s market every year, most of which make extravagant claims about what they are going to do for you and claims that they can do it better than other products or brands. Unfortunately, unless done by regulatory agencies out of concern for safety, there is precious little testing of these claims. One explanation for this phenomenon is the ineffectiveness of public demand. But, many producers would voluntarily conduct tests if there were convenient, effective, and inexpensive testing technologies. These technologies can be developed and implemented by ProtoGenie. In Governance and Management
Use ProtoGenie to support on-line governance, balloting, participant models of management, feedback, staff polling, surveys, virtual management, structure and process experiments, case management and tracking, program evaluation, and product evaluation.

In Political and Business Focus Groups
ProtoGenie provides the ideal tools for designing and conducting virtual focus groups in marketing and deliberative opinion polls in political research. Attitude measurement in focus groups and deliberative polls are somewhat like conventional opinion polling in that they involve measurement of attitudes and beliefs regarding issues. The great difference in focus groups and deliberative polls is that opinions are measured AFTER a discussion or deliberative process. The purpose is to provide answers to the elusive question, what would people think about choices or issues if they had an adequate chance to think about them and the opportunity to work them through with others? Thanks to the Internet, we can now create “virtual” focus groups and deliberative polls and take measurements of opinions at the end of sessions using ProtoGenie survey tools. For Complex Visual Stimuli
The way that ProtoGenie currently provides complex stimuli on the computer screen is by importing pre-built configurable software components from the ProtoGenie Library. The objective is to collect a large number of these special external stimuli components in a wide range of disciplines and fields. In keeping with ProtoGenie’s commitment to provide tools that enable non-programmers to create their own software including very complex and technical research protocols, a new feature of ProtoGenie is on the planning board. It is a test object generator called a Dynamic Graphical Display Generator (DGDG) or simply “ScreenDance.” More on Complex Visual Stimuli.

ProtoGenie in the Law
Two widely different kinds of applications of PG in the law illustrate the extraordinary potential of ProtoGenie. One application designs and implements traditional one-shot research studies in law. The other application designs and implements cybernetic systems (systems that learn) for decision-making in the law. More on ProtoGenie in the Law.

Family Research Genealogy
An example of the endless variety of practical and personal applications of the ProtoGenie toolkit to gather information is family history genealogy. ProtoGenie provides the ideal tool for collecting information from relatives, acquaintances, and other family researchers. Simply type in the questions you want to ask with instructions and generate a URL (Internet Link) that you can email to as many people as you wish. All of this information is stored for your subsequent use in a spreadsheet that you can use to piece together your family history and discover your roots. The makers of ProtoGenie plan to create a pre-made protocol for this special purpose and provide some standard family reports and charts with it.
