| Campus & Computer Support Programs Virtually all universities have a campus or statewide computer support facility. Some of these facilities are now offering services involving computerized research methods, such as computer-assisted survey technology. A good example is the Computer-Assisted Survey Methods program in the Survey Research Center, the University of California, at Berkeley, which offers consulting services and facilities for research design, data entry, data management, and data analysis. Other programs, such as the Social Science Computing Laboratory at Berkeley, provide support for archival analysis and related methods. But, few, if any, provide any support for computerized control group experiments, clinical trials, psycho-physiological research, and other research and evaluation methods. The online, open-source features of ProtoGenie™ make it an ideal facility for students and faculty at these institutions. ProtoGenie can help students design and create software for their term projects and theses. It can be used in statistics courses to design real studies and create data sets to statistically analyze and it can be used in classes across the board to help make the connection between theory and research and theory and practice. Vertical & Departmental Applications With ProtoGenie’s easy availability and powerful tools will come opportunities to develop studios of ProtoGenie protocols within departments and fields. A good example is in “Computers-in-the- Law programs at Law Colleges and institutes. Potential protocols include empirical research and expert systems to assist decision making. Science & Research Curricula - all Levels Use ProtoGenie in the classroom to bring to life scientific method and research design. At the college level, integrate ProtoGenie into scientific methods curricula. In stat courses, make the critical connection between study design and statistical analysis using ProtoGenie. Add the "applied science" dimension to all social and physical science curricula. Step into the new world of research on the Net with ProtoGenie to build your protocols. Use ProtoGenie Web research as the next step in distance learning. Integrate ProtoGenie into primary and secondary school science, chemistry, physics, and mathematics courses to illustrate concepts and to teach the foundations of empirical science and quantitative methods. Let students create their own studies. Use on-line experiments, as in chemistry, to extend instruction beyond the classroom. Clinical Diagnostic Systems Diagnostic procedures basically involve asking questions or presenting stimuli or both with paths dictated by patient responses. See ProtoGenie Challenge Projects. There are two basic types of diagnostic procedures. In one the author is considered to be the expert, so he/she determines for all future applications which answers take which paths. In the second major type, it is the clinician who administers the process who is considered to be the expert. In these discretionary diagnostic systems, a large variety of materials and lines of questioning are under control of the clinician. At any point in the process, the clinician can stop the process and start it again using different materials and/or a different line of questioning or strategy. The first type is a basic “expert information system.” The second is a “discretionary information system. Both will be supported by ProtoGenie. |
ProtoGenie In The Field Take your tools with you to the field. Collect your data in schools and other field setting using local facilities or your laptop or tablet and ProtoGenie Online. Use a handheld with Internet capability to take notes and record observations in the field. Collect data from whole groups of individuals in natural or experimental settings, each with their own ProtoGenie recording device. Assistive Technology for People with Disabilities Thousands of new products (software and hardware) come on the world’s market for people with disabilities. Unfortunately, but for a few exceptions, systematic evaluation to see if these products work is virtually nonexistent. One explanation for this is ineffectiveness demand. But, many makers of products for the disabled would conduct tests if there were convenient, effective, and inexpensive testing technologies. These technologies can be made available and affordable by ProtoGenie. For a disabled person, good evaluation can mean the difference between full and marginal participation in the economy and society. There are two basic types of product evaluation - performance testing and technology evaluation. Performance testing involves the external properties of a product, including adequacy, flexibility, feel, usability, cost, effectiveness, speed, responsiveness, reliability, support, documentation, and compatibility. Testing may involve one product or the comparison of two or more. Performance testing can be done by one evaluator (expert) or by a panel of experts (judges). Technology evaluation focuses directly on the “change” technologies behind products. The basic question is does this intervention work? Technology evaluation approaches can be invasive or non-invasive. Invasive means getting inside the product to establish communication with ProtoGenie. Generally speaking, getting inside hardware devices and source code requires the permission, cooperation, and assistance of the product maker - which is often difficult and costly to do. Use ProtoGenie to support on-line governance, balloting, participant models of management, feedback, staff polling, surveys, virtual management, structure and process experiments, case management and tracking, program evaluation, and product evaluation. The Global Conference Room Use ProtoGenie to stay abreast of current research in your field and topics of interest, to share software and results, and to communicate with other researchers about problems, solutions, and potential collaboration. Search ProtoGenie archives by field, method, design, topic, or keywords. Post questions to specific individuals or groups or to all members of the ProtoGenie List. See PG World. |
