Quick Start - Make OnLine Poll

This single page of online instructions demonstrates how you can make a program (protocol) in a few short minutes to conduct an online spot survey on the question whether the United Stated should exit or stay in Iraq.

To see what a run of this protocol would like like, click here.

Start Up
1.   Sign up for a protogenie account.  Log onto ProtoGenie in the top menu of the ProtoGenie home page.  Click on "Start New Protocol From Scratch (Blank Protocol)."
2.   In the popup window "Descriptive Information About This Protocol."  Under "Title" enter "Spot Poll on U.S. Policy on Iraq" and close the window.

Label the Panel
1.   Click on the "Make and Edit Groups" tab.  Click on the label, "Unspecified Panel" and change it to "Survey Panel." Ignore other columns.

2.   Scroll down to the Instrument Construction Area under the heading "Welcome Screen" and in the text field enter:
"WELCOME
Click on the right arrow to begin.  Read each question carefully and then click on the answer that best fits your opinion."
3.   To make an End screen,  click on the "Create" menu in the Event Specification Table, select "Support," and then "Guidance Event."  Give this event the label  "END screen."  Scroll down and in the box provided, enter "Thank You For Your Participation in This Poll."

Make First Question
1.   Click on the "Make and Edit Events" tab.  In the Events Specification Table, click on the "Create" menu, select "Measurement," and then "Multiple Choice." In the Label field, give it the name "Position on Iraq."  Ignore other fields.
2.   Scroll down to the Instrument Construction Area under the heading "Position on Iraq."  In the question text box, enter "Which of the following statements best reflects your feelings about U.S. policy toward Iraq?"  In the box labeled "Number of Text Boxes to Show," set the number to "4." Immediately below this, set the "Number of Responses the User is Allowed to Check" to "1."
3.   Immediately below, there are four open fields for responses.  In the first field, enter "Leave American troops indefinitely to protect American interests in the Middle East."   In the second field, enter "Stay as long as it takes."   In the third field, enter "Pull all American troops out in an announced time."   In the fourth field, type "Withdraw American troops immediately."

Make Second Question
1.   Repeat the steps under "Make First Question," above, except in the list of measurement types, select "Slider Bar" instead of "New Multiple Choice Event" and give it the label "Intensity of Position." In the question box, enter "How strong is your position on Iraq?"  In the box for the number of labels on the slider bar, enter "5." In the text box, enter "How strong is your position on Iraq?"  In the fields for the five labels, enter from the top down "Very Sure," Sure," So-So," "Unsure," and "Very Unsure."

Sequence Events

2.   Repeat this step to copy the other three events to the Survey Panel. Click SAVE.

Check Sequence and Test
1.   The order in which events appear in the Sequencing Window is the order in which they will be executed.  If you need to change the order, select an event, click on the Move menu and toggle the event UP or Down as needed.
2.   To test this program, click on the "Execute" link in the top menu.  Select the subject option called "Run Anonymously..." and click on Run "Survey Panel."  The Results Page should have entries for your two questions.  Click on "Edit Protocol" in the top menu to return to the Editor to continue.

Set up On-line Access by Anonymous Subjects
1.   To get a URL (Internet address) to insert in your email or webpage invitation, click "GET URL" in the top menu bar.  Under "Group," select "Survey Panel."  Under "Login," select "Use an anonymous subject."
2.   Click "Generate URL."  Highlight and copy the URL appearing in the Generate URL window.  Paste this url in the email or webpage you intend to disseminate.  When respondents click on this url they are taken directly to the Welcome Page of the protocol.  After they complete the survey, respondents are thanked for their participation and the results are automatically stored anonymously by case number.

Viewing and Formatting Results For Analysis
1.  Click on the start up option "Access Your Personal Library of Protocols."  Click on "Spot Poll on U.S. Policy on Iraq."  Click on "Results."
2.  In the top menu, click on "View All Sessions."  This brings up a page containing a list of cases that were completed in this survey and the option to look at detailed results for each case.
3.  In the top menu, click on "View All Sessions as a Single Data Table."  This displays a data table in standard row (cases) by column (variables)  data file format.  To analyze these data, highlight everything in the table, copy it onto the clipboard, and paste this into a standard spreadsheet or analysis program.

DONE
To view a "Demonstration Protocol" based on this tutorial, click here.  You can browse the Composer/Editor and you can Run this protocol or you can make a copy of it for your own library and do whatever you like with that copy, but for obvious reasons you cannot make changes in the original protocol.
